This mid-tier robovac offers good vacuuming and mopping, the mapping is strong, and it copes well with pet hair. It's less good at getting up to the edges of rooms and the object avoidance can be unreliable, though.

❌ You don't need the very best mopping: The advanced mopping and comprehensive dock bump up the price here, and other robovacs will do a good enough mopping job for most people (the Eufy X10 at #1 has a great mop, for example).

The S8 MaxV Ultra comes with excellent AI-powered obstacle detection, bringing back the camera it last had on the S7 MaxV Ultra. It’s not quite as good as Roomba’s obstacle detection — it sometimes confused a pile of Cheerios for a charging cable and avoided them — but it’s much better than the Roborocks that rely on non-camera obstacle detection.

Our tester ran it in a house with two French Bulldogs and four adult humans, and found it got the floors impressively clean, picking up everything from fine dust to larger debris, and tackling hair very well too. Two side brushes mean it's able to pick up debris on either side of it, too.

This design makes it excellent for homes with lots of furniture legs or hard-to-reach spots. The vacuum operates at a noise level similar to a microwave, letting you clean at any time without disruption.

The X40 also features an extending side brush arm to reach corners — like the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra — and its dual oscillating mop pads are more effective than Roborock’s thin microfiber pad.

Over the last few years, they have gone from being utilitarian devices that sweep your floor to full-fledged home robots that can vacuum and mop your home and then trundle off to clean themselves to be ready for the next run.

This vacuum is able to sense dirt and boost its power to pull up more debris. And unlike some vacuums that can Top 3 Automatic Vacuum Cleaners only clean when you move it forward, this one picks up debris moving both forward and backward.

The companion app works extremely well – our tester was especially impressed that it automatically partitioned the rooms into their own spaces. In terms of performance, we had almost pelo issues with this robot vacuum at all – if it's in your budget, it's worth the investment.

✅ You have tall thresholds: The Curv is great at scaling tall steps, and on test it very rarely got stuck.

The Narwal has some innovative features, including dirt sense — which analyzes the dirt level in the water and prompts it to remop — and an ability to adapt the pressure of its mop based on the type of floor, applying more pressure to tile and less to hardwood.

Another nice-to-have feature, AI-powered obstacle detection helps your robot “intelligently” detect and avoid clutter (and a potential poop apocalypse if it encounters pet waste). These models use cameras (worth noting) to see objects in their path and onboard processors to “decide” how to approach them based on what they see.
